SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS

LETTY REMARKED:

Since I've never really talked to anyone like Letty, it took about three months to hear her in my mind. The speech pattern that evolved was a combination of the early 1900's farmhouse English my grandparents used (methinks, etc.) and the lovely phrasing of three former Irish immigrants who worked in the household of a wealthy woman (on the Main Line) where I was a glorified secretary. Letty is my favorite character so far, an adorable old crank.
